Taapsee Pannu (born 1 August 1987) is an Indian model-turned-film actress, who has worked in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi film industries. Taapsee worked as a software professional and also pursued a career in modelling before becoming an actress. During her modelling career, she appeared in a number of commercials and won titles such as "Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face" and "Safi Femina Miss Beautiful Skin" in 2008.
After a short stint with modelling, Taapsee made her acting debut with the 2010 Telugu film Jhummandi Naadam directed by Raghavendra Rao. Since then, she has appeared in a number of critically acclaimed films such as Aadukalam, Vastadu Naa Raju, Mr. Perfect, and Vandhaan Vendraan. Her Tamil film Aadukalam met with critical acclaim and enjoyed commercial success upon release and eventually went on to win six National Film Awards at the 58th National Film Awards. She has also worked in a Malayalam film and has been signed in for three Telugu films and a Hindi film.
Her very first Tamil film was a film called ‘Aadukalam’, directed by Vetrimaran. Here, she enacted the character of an Anglo Indian girl who falls in love with Dhanush, who plays the role of a guy from a village. At the 58th National Film Award ceremony, this film went on to grab 6 National Film Awards and Taapsee Pannu’s performance in the film was highly appreciated by all. In the year 2011, she shared the screen space with Vishnu Manchu in the Telegu film ‘VastaduNaaRaju’ directed by HemantMadhukar. Next up, she starred in the SohanSeenulal directed Malayalam film called ‘Doubles’ (2011) starring Nadia Moidu, Mammootty, SaijuKurup, Suresh, Salim Kumar, Y. G. Mahendra, Avinash, SurajVenjaramoodu, AnoopChandran and Taapsee Pannu herself.
That same year, she did a small role in the Dasaradh directed ‘Mr. Perfect’ where he starred alongside Kajal Aggarwal and Prabhas. Again in 2011, she appeared in the high budget flick ‘Veera’ directed by Ramesh Verma but this film received only moderate reviews. Her next project was the Tamil film titled ‘VandhaanVendraan’ directed by R. Kannan. This film did not create much of an impact at the box office. After ‘VandhaanVendraan’, she signed up for the Krishna Vamsi directed ‘Mogudu’ in which she received lots of appreciation for her performance in this film.
Her filmography includes ‘JhummandiNaadam’, ‘Aadukalam’, ‘VastaduNaaRaju’, ‘Doubles’, ‘Mr. Perfect’, ‘Veera’, ‘VandhaanVendraan’, ‘Mogudu’, ‘Daruvu’, ‘GundelloGodari’, ‘MaranthenMannithen’, ‘Muni 3: Ganga’, ‘Jackpot’, ‘ChashmeBuddoor’, ‘Valai’ and ‘Shadow’.
Reports were abuzz that Tapsee has hired a manager and he would be operating from Mumbai, especially for the Hindi projects as she is unable to sign any new assignments post the release of her debut flick 'Chasmee Baddoor'. Tapsee, however, breathed fire at the rumor mongers for speculating baseless news items. "Every actor/actress will be having a manager. The duty of such person is to plan the assignments signed in a proper manner and help the actors to complete them in time, not bringing the offers.
Taapsee Pannu and Arya, who teamed up for Arrambam, which was directed by Vishnuvardhan, are likely to come together again. We now hear that they will team up once again for Magizh Thirumeni's Megaamaan. Though the buzz in the industry was that Shruti Haasan would play the lead in the film, now we hear that Taapsee will play his love interest. However, there is no official confirmation, yet.
Taapsee Pannu, who made her debut in Hindi cinema with David Dhawan’s Chashme Buddoor, is all set to play a full-on sardarni from Amritsar in debutant director Amit Roy’s romcom Running Shaadi.com with Kai Po Che actor Amit Sadh.
Director-producer Shoojit Sircar, who has roped in "Chashme Baddoor" fame actress Taapsee Pannu for his Running Shaadi.com, marvels at her acting skills.
In the film, Taapsee is paired with Amit Sadh of Kai Po Che! fame, who recommended her name to the filmmaker. "There were little doubts in my mind, but I think Amit (Sadh) was quite clear and he told me about Taapsee. When I met Taapsee, all my doubts were gone and I thought Taapsee was absolutely bang on as a cast," Sircar said in an interview.
