Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman (born September 1, 1996), known simply as Zendaya, is an American actress, singer and dancer. She began performing at an early age with the dance group Future Shock Oakland, the California Shakespeare Theater, and as part of her studies at the Oakland School for the Arts and CalShakes Conservatory Program. While still in her early teens, she embarked on her entertainment career, graduating from modeling work for Macy's and Old Navy to appearing in the video for Kidz Bop's version of Katy Perry's hit single "Hot n Cold."
Zendaya grew as a part of the nearby California Shakespeare Theater in Orinda where her mother works as the house manager in addition to training at the theater's student conservatory program. Zendaya has performed in numerous stage productions. Zendaya also helped her mother seat patrons and sell raffle tickets to benefit the theater. While she was attending Oakland School for the Arts she starred as Little Ti Moune in Once on This Island at the Berkeley Playhouse and the breakout role of the male character Joe in Caroline, or Change at Palo Alto's TheaterWorks.
She studied her craft at the CalShakes Conservatory Program and at the American Conservatory Theater. Her other stage credits include Richard III, Twelfth Night, and As You Like It. Zendaya's official site states that her name derives from the word meaning "to give thanks" in Shona (a Bantu language native to the Shona people of Zimbabwe). She also spent three years dancing with her former dance group called Future Shock Oakland. They danced such dances as Hip Hop and Hula.

Her favorite dessert is coffee ice cream. She always thought she'd be a basketball player and not an actress. "My parents had me playing basketball on competitive teams when I was in kindergarten. Even though my heart belongs to the arts, I'm a tomboy at heart, too," she said. She was once a backup dancer for Selena Gomez in a Sears commercial. According to the actress, her name was originally Chendaya, but her dad is a fan of Z's so he switched the first letters. She claims her favorite food is burritos. Speaking of Timberlake, he’s a hopeful in the Favorite Male Artist Pop/Rock category, but he’ll have to beat Bruno Mars and Robin Thicke if he hopes to take home the hardware.
Demi Lovato and Zendaya Respond to Joe Jonas' Disney Bashing - His candid interview with New York Magazine drew a lot of attention, and now fellow Disney alums Demi Lovato and Zendaya Coleman are responding to Joe Jonas' harsh criticism of the family friendly company. In the publication, the middle JoBro explained, "Being a part of the Disney thing for so long will make you not want to be this perfect little puppet forever. Eventually, I hit a limit and though, 'Screw all this, I'm just going to show people who I am.'"
Then, he continued, "I think that happened to a lot of us. Disney kids are spunky in some way, and I think that’s why Disney hires them. 'Look, he jumped up on the table!' Five, six, ten years later, they’re like, 'Oh! What do we do?' Come on, guys. You did this to yourselves." Though he outed her as the person who convinced him to try marijuana (along with Miley Cyrus), ex-girlfriend Demi Lovato showed her support by tweeting simply, "@joejonas love you brother. #family/friendsforever." However, Zendaya Coleman, who just came off a popular Disney series called "Shake It Up," thought he went too far, tweeting, "I admire @joejonas and his honesty...so real and brave...but that's his journey, not mine...don't worry about me #igotthis."
